N-400 with Expired Green Card: Can You Still Apply?

Yes, you can file Form N-400 with an expired green card. The December 2022 USCIS policy change extends your card automatically for 24 months.

If your green card has expired and you are eligible for citizenship, you do not need to renew it first. Filing Form N-400 triggers an automatic 24-month extension of your expired card, saving you the cost and wait time of a separate Form I-90 renewal.
